ELI Leadership Seminar, 2016, San Antonio TX

The ELI Leadership Seminar, "Promoting a Sustainable and Effective Teaching and Learning Ecosystem via Research Proven Practice," is an extended learning opportunity threaded throughout the annual meeting program. The goals for this seminar are to:

  • Enable quality teaching and learning through evidence-based faculty development to diffuse proven instructional interventions and practices
  • Discover ways to gather evidence using a research model for online learning, including key research questions driving inquiry
  • Explore different research designs (experimental and survey with data mining) for studying teaching and learning innovations
  • Develop a research plan for your program or institution that will assist in identifying effective instructional and institutional practices in blended and online learning
  • Identify potential methods of effectively engaging faculty in teaching and researching innovations in student learning
  • Learn about institutional mechanisms that can impact quality in teaching and learning, particularly in blended and online environments
  • Enable participants to network with peers interested in promoting effective teaching and learning through research on blended and online programming at universities
Participants, both new and experienced, will benefit from peer interaction and the opportunity to network and engage with leaders during small group discussions. Participants will meet with, share with, and learn from a cohort of peers from a wide range of positions supporting teaching and learning from different types of higher education institutions.

Who should participate?

The seminar attempts to bring together individuals who are leading initiatives, programs or organizations on campus that share a common goal of improving student learning. One of the goals of the seminar is to share what research, instructional, and institutional practices are effective in ensuring student success in order to better understand the learning ecosystem in higher education, in particular with regard to digital learning (including tech-enhanced, blended, and online). We hope participants in the seminar will come away with some tools and potential partners across institutions to assist in gathering evidence to better demonstrate the positive impact technology and pedagogy can have on student outcomes. If you are involved in projects, programs, or initiatives on your campus that have learning outcomes at their core, we encourage you to participate in the seminar.
Seminar design:
The goal of this seminar is to assist participants with ensuring quality and access in higher education through digital learning. To that end, we will be sharing the work of the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA) to provide attendees with practical guides to research to enhance the capacity to gather evidence on his/her own campus and drive effective practice at the course and program level. Throughout the seminar, participants will share information, engage in group discussions and in team-based activities.

Join us online for this live, open-to-all, 30-minute online information session designed to provide individuals with a general overview of the program covering details regarding the schedule, activities, and goals. Dr. Joosten, co-director of the DETA Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will also discuss suggested resources to be reviewed prior to attending the seminar in San Antonio.

Tuesday, February 2, 8:00–11:00 a.m. (CT), Travis AB
Participants will discuss strategies for gathering evidence of interventions that influence student outcomes on their campuses. This session will help participants understand the current state of research and provide a general model and framework for guiding exploration for evidence at their institution. Participants will work with Drs. Diane Reddy and Ray Flemming to develop a research plan to answer key questions for their programs.
Tuesday’s learning objectives will include:
  • Review leadership seminar goals
  • Review the current state of research in blended and online learning, research models for online learning, and framework of inquiry for examining digital learning
  • Generate potential research questions
  • Review research toolkit
  • Develop a research plan
Wednesday, February 3, 11:45 a.m.–1:30 p.m. (CT), Travis AB
Using the outcomes of the previous session, we’ll discuss the practical challenges of launching an effort to collect evidence of the positive impact on student outcomes on his/her campus Participants will share ideas on engaging faculty and staff and informing faculty development and instructional design. Participants will work with Dr. Simone Conceicao to reflect and revise research plans and extend them to consider engagement of key stakeholders and diffusion of practices across campus.
Wednesday’s learning objectives will include:
  • Discuss leadership challenges in gathering evidence of key factors that impact student outcomes
  • Brainstorm ideas for motivating and incentivising faculty and staff
  • Explore key factors and effective use cases in faculty development and instructional design
  • Share effective institutional practices for research and teaching
  • Reflect on and revise research plan
Thursday, February 4, 8:30–9:15 a.m. (CT), Travis AB
In this closing session, DETA research fellow, Roger Smith from the UW-Milwaukee R2D2 Center will discuss how eLearning research can support access for students with disabilities on their campuses. Areas of discussion may include disability/impairment data in eLearning research, data collection guidelines for valid measures of impairment and access, and interventions to support students with disabilities

Thursday’s learning objectives will include:
  • Describe key disability factors included in current or planned projects.
  • Identify possible effects of including or excluding disability factors on the overall research questions.
  • List possible actions for managing unintended disability related factors in studies.
